19-Sep-2014 - CL T20 - Cape Cobras v Northern Districts

BetVictor posted the odds @ 10/11 on both teams. But they have reduced the odds on Northern Districts now to 4/5.

I have very little information on this match right now.

Beuran Hendricks [The highest wicket taker for Cape Cobras in Ram-Slam T20] is not playing because of an injury.

The venue for this game is Raipur, where ND won all their 3 qualifying matches.

I am not very sure of two factors, which has been worrying me in taking a decision about this match.

1. Who will feature in Cape Cobras' playing XI.

2. ND has played 3 matches in a row without changing their squad members. Will they get affected by fatigue or will they try some players from bench?

Without getting some ideas on these I cannot comment anything early. It is always better to look forward to a match were more concrete info is available rather than burning your pocket by playing blind folded.

I will try to post a tip if some reasonable information starts flowing.

The information river has started flowing. And many of the info that you are seeing is wrong. I am so sick and tired of either bookmakers shortening the odds, or the media publishing misleading news.

Let us analyze Cape Cobras news in detail first.

Cape Cobras

Misleading News 1 - Dale Steyn, JP Duminy, Beuran Hendricks and Kallis are missing in the squad

Steyn, Duminy and Hendricks are out because of injury concerns, Kallis plays for KKR.

Analysis of Misleading News 1

Steyn is the main fast bowler of Cape Cobras. How many matches Steyn played for them? Zero.

Steyn never played a single match for Cobras in the Ram-Slam T20, then how do they miss him from the squad. If he is there to play he is a great asset, and no arguments. But he never played for them for the whole tournament means he is not part of the squad in any case.

Kallis the veteran all-rounder is not playing for them. How many did he play for them then? 1 match. That too on the final and he scored 5 runs.

Only Duminy and Hendricks are the regular features of the squad, they both are valuable players. But Duminy's contributions are also below par [5, 0, 45, 9*, 11*, 56, 29, 10, 64]. Which gives the conclusion that the core team is still there and only player who is missing is Hendricks.

Misleading News 2 - Cobras have good spin bowlers in Dane Piedt and Robin Peterson

They have two regular spin bowlers Piedt and Peterson who will pose challenges to other teams in India.

Analysis of Misleading News 2

Sunil Narine played 6 matches for Cobras and he was their main spinner. He took 10 wickets in 6 matches and miserly bowling average. Why nobody [Not even CricInfo] is mentioning Cobras are missing Narine. Dane Piedt was completely sidelined. But his stats are also not great. 31 matches 21 wickets in T20s. Not so great for a mystery spinner.

Misleading News 3 - Cobras can play against Spin Bowling well

They have good spin bowlers in their team. Won 8 out of 10 matches they played. Their spinners have got lot of wickets against their opponents, so in the nets they get a lot of exposure. Blah! Blah!

Analysis of Misleading News 3

In the Ram-Slam T20 Cobras lost 58 wickets and 17 goes to spinners. Which is 29%. Reduce the wickets caused by run-outs you are looking at a possible 35-40% wickets lost for spin bowling. Cobras Captain himself has admitted of coming late to India and having not enough time to practice at the Raipur pitch [Where the Northern Districts are camping for the last one month].

Northern Districts

Misleading News 4 - Northern Districts and Cape Cobras are equal teams

This is purely assumed because of Cobras performance in the previous CLT20 tournaments. These two teams are not equal. ND are very much ahead on all aspects.

There isn't much wrong news about ND's form. But everyone's over estimating their batting against spin. They are simply attacking the spinners right from the word go. Rasool and Ojha lost their confidence of getting poor support from their fielders. They are better than many overseas teams, since they are practicing in India for the last one month.

Tip for the match

CC are having only two big names, Amla and Philander. Ontong, Levi and Kemp are expected to hit some lusty blows. Apart from this nothing much to talk about them.

I am only concerned about ND's fatigue issues and the mystery of unknown players in their opposition. [Their captain has spoken about analyzing the IPL players while coming here]

The good news is bookmakers got the odds wrong because of the misleading news.
